This will be the third consecutive year that Ski Mont
Gabriel has been the host resort for the FIS World Cup
and there is real excitement in the air as the Canadians
are off to one of their best starts as a team in history.
After winning four medals in pre-Christmas World Cups
in China and France – by Steve Omischl (with two),
and World Champions Pierre-Alexandre Rousseau and Kristi
Richards – the team showed their depth with Warren
Tanner from West Vancouver, BC winning his first ever
World Cup gold in moguls on Friday; Steve Omischl from
Kelowna, BC won another aerials event on Saturday; and
then Alex Bilodeau of Rosemère, QC won a silver
medal in another moguls event on Sunday with Rousseau
placing fourth.
On the women’s side Audrey Robichaud from Quebec
City narrowly missed the podium with her career best
fourth place finish on Sunday. World Cup rookie Nathalie
Bazin had a career best ninth place finish and Richards
was tenth.
On Saturday Deidra Dionne of Red Deer, AB continued
her comeback from injury with a sixth place finish.
“We’re really excited to have the Canada
Post Freestyle Grand Prix come to Ski Mont Gabriel again
this year,” said SMG General Manager Normand Daigneault.
“This is an outstanding bunch of athletes who
represent all their countries very well – and
it’s such a great sport to watch. Hopefully we’ll
get some big crowd out to cheer on the Canadians, especially
because we have so many of them from this area.”
