Six local athletes from the Okanagan were chosen for the
2008 Supporting the Dream Legacy Fund grants. They will each
receive $500 to help them with their training and competition
costs.
Keara Maguire, a speed skater from Kelowna is amongst the
six recipients. She has relocated to Calgary to train at the
Olympic Oval and plans to use the grant to buy new skates.
Summerland’s Matt Crosby, a rising athlete in freestyle
mogul skiing, is happy to receive the funding to help him
with training costs in Whistler during the summer.
Twenty-two-year-old Jeff Symonds, a Penticton triathlon competitor
will also be receiving the grant. Watching the Ironman as
a kid was what sparked his dreams of competing in triathlons.

Brendan Hauptman, who is also from Penticton but training
for luge in Calgary, says that he will put the money towards
a new laptop. “In luge, using video footage to analyze
runs can make a huge difference, and having a laptop that
can store the footage and notes of other tracks can give me
an edge. It's also useful for keeping in contact with family
and friends while away for competition.”
Cross-country skiing has a budding star from Vernon, Alysson
Marshall. She is excited to take herself to the next level
in her sport and use the funds toward program fees and coaching.
She was the top Canadian at the 2008 Junior World Championships
and has been a recipient of the BC Premier’s Athletic
Award from 2005 until 2008.
Owen Harrison, a 19 year-old from Kelowna, is a promising
road cyclist who intends to use some of the funds to help
him get to the National Championships in Quebec later this
year. “The National Championships are of great importance
when the National team is being selected. If I ever want to
make it to the under-23 World Championships, I'll have to
be on Team Canada.”
The Okanagan is home to some amazing athletes, and some promising
future Olympians.
The Supporting the Dream Legacy Fund supports Okanagan’s
local athletes and financially assists them in achieving their
athletic goals. Athletes inspire people to live healthy lives,
to set goals, and to follow our dreams. They are great ambassadors
for our communities.
